Scoliosis Awareness

National Scoliosis Awareness Month takes place yearly in June with the goal to highlight the growing need for public education, early detection and awareness about scoliosis and its prevalence within the community. The campaign also unites scoliosis patients, families, doctors, and local related organizations in collaborative partnerships of local activities and events throughout the month. Another important highlight of this month is the emphasis on early detection to prevent further problems from arising.

By definition, scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine with an accompanying rotation that most often occurs in adolescents. Scoliosis can occur in people with orthopedic and neurological conditions. Many cases begin with mild symptoms, yet without proper treatment can worsen as someone grows. Severe cases can be disabling with potential for reduced chest space which means the lungs may not function properly.

Symptoms to watch out for include:

  • Uneven shoulders

  • One shoulder blade that appears more prominent than the other

  • Uneven waist

  • One hip higher than the other

  • One side of the rib cage jutting forward

  • A prominence on one side of the back when bending forward

While it may be caused by a pre-existing condition, scoliosis can also be a hereditary characteristic or develop from a previous spinal injury.

Depending on the age of the patient and the severity of the curve, scoliosis can be treated by a variety of physical therapy interventions. Patients are educated and instructed in range of motion exercises and strength training to improve stability of the core and back. Manual therapy techniques such as joint mobilization are used, as well as a variety of therapeutic modalities to reduce discomfort.

The most important thing to keep in mind is to simply stay active. Exercise is essential because it strengthens the body’s core and promotes flexibility of the spine and muscles. Activities such as swimming, yoga, dancing, or any other enjoyable exercise are the best way to promote a healthy, pain-free lifestyle.
